We’ve updated the Program Schedule page with a lot more detail, including the rooms we’ll be using at different times throughout the convention.

Daytime programming will happen primarily in the hotel’s Grand Ballroom on the ground floor and in the Sainte Claire Room on the second floor. We also have access (both day and night) to the small second-floor Boardroom for breakout sessions, private meetings, and specialty events.

Friday evening’s reception/mixer/Open Space Programming event will be in the Fireplace Lounge (Palm Room) off the lobby of the hotel.

Saturday evening’s “Fannish Inquisition” will be across the street in Room K of the San José Mcenery Convention Center, about 400 ft/130 m from the front door of the hotel.

Hospitality will be in the Grand Suite near the 6th floor elevator lobby.

Distillery Tour: Last Call

December 1st, 2010 · Tourism

As of Noon Wednesday, there were still six seats left on the St. George’s Spirits Tour. If you’re going on the tour, meet in the hotel lobby by 1:45 PM (the bus is scheduled to depart at 2 PM) on Thursday.

If you still are interested in making the trip but haven’t reserved a place, write to the SFSFC Treasurer, Cindy Scott, to make last-minute payment arrangements for the $55 tour ticket. If space remains, you may still be able to join at the last minute, but the sooner you contact us, the more likely you are to get a seat.

Christmas in the Park

November 30th, 2010 · Hotel, Travel

San José’s annual Christmas in the Park event is going on now through Christmas across the street from the Sainte Claire Hotel in the Plaza de Cesar Chavez. Besides the many holiday-themed displays, the event includes many food vendors, which means that there is, in effect, a temporary food court set up across the street from SMOFCon 28’s hotel.

The traffic going to and from the event can cause congestion and parking issues. Although people staying at our hotel have free valet parking, those members who are commuting to/from the convention may want to factor in extra travel time due to people trying to come to see Christmas in the Park.

Advance Program Planning

November 28th, 2010 · Program

SMOFCon Programming leader Tom Whitmore has posted a message about SMOFCon Programming that’s worth repeating here on the front page:

SMOFCon is almost upon us! We’ve had several people indicate that they’re pulling together some items to suggest we talk about them at the con — I’m excited about them, and I want to remind everyone that doing advance planning if you want to present something is encouraged. Not everything may appeal to enough people to have us talk about it officially, but I’d bet that there will be some people who want to talk with you about whatever excites you; if you tell them, they’re more likely to do so. That’s one type of item that shows up at this sort of program.

The other major type is the “questions I always wanted to ask, but couldn’t find someone to answer” item. It’s okay to suggest an item that you don’t want to lead; it helps if you can suggest people who might want to lead it. They can say “No!” if they want, of course.

See you all next weekend!

Book Your Tour Seat Now

November 23rd, 2010 · Tourism

Please make sure you make your reservation for the St. George’s Spirits distillery tour as soon as possible to guarantee a seat. We’ve had interest from local fans who want to go on the tour but do not plan to attend SMOFcon, and if SMOFcon members do not fill up the bus, we will sell tickets to those people. We want to make sure that SMOFcon attendees have priority and that everyone who is a SMOFcon member that wants to go, does.

Our block of discounted-rate hotel rooms at the Sainte Claire Hotel has expired, so our advance-reservation room rate is no longer available. As of November 20, you can still book a room at the Sainte Claire; however, regular room rates (starting at around $144; discounted rates available for AAA and other groups) apply.

  • Fairmont: 170 South Market St.
  • Hilton: 300 South Almaden Blvd. (SE corner of South Almaden Blvd. and East San Carlos St.)
  • Crowne Plaza: 282 South Almaden Blvd. (NE corner of South Almaden Blvd. and East San Carlos St.)

We’ve plotted these hotels and the Sainte Claire (302 South Market St. on the SE corner of South Market St. and East San Carlos St.) on the map below.
