Costume-Con 39, Westercon 74 Committees Discharged

Published by under Costume-Con,Minutes,Westercon

At its March 16, 2024 meeting, the SFSFC Board of Directors discharged the standing committees previously established to operate Costume-Con 39 and Westercon 74. Both conventions have completed all of their tasks. This action means that both convention committees will close their financial books and turn over any remaining surplus assets to the SFSFC corporate general fund. Any residual responsibilities of these committees have similarly been absorbed by the corporation’s general fund.

SFSFC continues to maintain both conventions’ websites. Anyone with questions about either committee can still contact the organization through those convention’s general-information inquiry addresses or they can contact SFSFC directly.

Worldcon 76/SFSFC and Jon Del Arroz Settle Suit

Published by under Worldcon

4 June 2021
To Whom it May Concern:

SFSFC AND JON DEL ARROZ HAVE SETTLED THE LAWSUIT MR. DEL ARROZ FILED WHICH INVOLVED HIS BEING BANNED FROM WORLDCON 76. IN CONCLUDING THE DISPUTE, SFSFC WISHES TO ISSUE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

SFSFC acknowledges the importance of reputation, especially for a relatively new author, and regrets that its public statement about barring his attendance might have led people unfamiliar with Mr. Del Arroz and his work to infer that he is or was a racist. For that, SFSFC apologizes. This attendance ban was specific to the Worldcon 76 events produced by SFSFC, and Mr. Del Arroz has the same opportunity as other members of the public to register for future SFSFC events. Worldcon 76 does not tolerate discrimination in any form — including through cosplay — based on but not limited to gender, race, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical/mental health conditions. SFSFC firmly believes that healthy political discourse requires active, mutual, good faith participation by members of the community with differing opinions.

Kevin Roche
Chair, Worldcon 76 in San Jose
President, San Francisco Science Fiction Conventions, Inc.

SFSFC to Host 2021 Westercon in Tonopah

Published by under Westercon

SFSFC was selected to host Westercon 74, the 2021 West Coast Science Fantasy Conference, in Tonopah, Nevada, July 2-5, 2021, at the Tonopah Convention Center, Mizpah/Belvada Hotels, and other hotels to be announced.

The members of SpikeCon/Westercon 72 voted to award the right to host Westercon 74 to the bid for Tonopah in voting held at SpikeCon over the weekend of July 4-7, 2019

Attending memberships in Westercon 74 are $40 through at least December 31, 2019, with discounts for those people who voted in the site selection election. See the Westercon 74 website for more information and the Westercon 74 registration website to register now.

The online registration system, Grenadine, calls all our memberships “tickets” and this is not something we can change on their site. Rest assured that you are buying memberships to the 2021 Westercon, and that the convention is being run by a non-profit, tax-exempt charitable organization, despite the “ticket” labeling on the Grenadine site. If you would prefer to not register through Grenadine, you can send payment to the address below.

Note that the Grenadine site does not have those people who voted in site selection loaded into it at this time, and therefore the “Upgrade from Voting to Attending” option is not currently available. Only new memberships are currently available through the Grenadine site. Conversion from voting membership will be available online at a future date. If you voted and want to upgrade immediately, download the current registration form and mailing it with payment by check, money order, or credit card to:
