Costume-Con 39, Westercon 74 Committees Discharged

At its March 16, 2024 meeting, the SFSFC Board of Directors discharged the standing committees previously established to operate Costume-Con 39 and Westercon 74. Both conventions have completed all of their tasks. This action means that both convention committees will close their financial books and turn over any remaining surplus assets to the SFSFC corporate general fund. Any residual responsibilities of these committees have similarly been absorbed by the corporation’s general fund.

SFSFC continues to maintain both conventions’ websites. Anyone with questions about either committee can still contact the organization through those convention’s general-information inquiry addresses or they can contact SFSFC directly.

Worldcon 76/SFSFC and Jon Del Arroz Settle Suit

4 June 2021
To Whom it May Concern:

SFSFC AND JON DEL ARROZ HAVE SETTLED THE LAWSUIT MR. DEL ARROZ FILED WHICH INVOLVED HIS BEING BANNED FROM WORLDCON 76. IN CONCLUDING THE DISPUTE, SFSFC WISHES TO ISSUE THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

SFSFC acknowledges the importance of reputation, especially for a relatively new author, and regrets that its public statement about barring his attendance might have led people unfamiliar with Mr. Del Arroz and his work to infer that he is or was a racist. For that, SFSFC apologizes. This attendance ban was specific to the Worldcon 76 events produced by SFSFC, and Mr. Del Arroz has the same opportunity as other members of the public to register for future SFSFC events. Worldcon 76 does not tolerate discrimination in any form — including through cosplay — based on but not limited to gender, race, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical/mental health conditions. SFSFC firmly believes that healthy political discourse requires active, mutual, good faith participation by members of the community with differing opinions.

Kevin Roche
Chair, Worldcon 76 in San Jose
President, San Francisco Science Fiction Conventions, Inc.

Westercon 66 Joins SFSFC Fold

Westercon 66, the 2013 West Coast Science Fantasy Conference, has been adopted as part of the SFSFC corporate family and will be run as a committee of SFSFC, like the two past Westercon run by SFSFC. Convention co-chairs Kevin Roche and Andy Trembley will continue to run Westercon 66, which will be held at a yet-to-be-determined site in the Sacramento, California area.

The Westercon 66 bid was awarded to a committee headed by Roche and Trembley by a vote of the Westercon 64 Business Meeting after no eligible bid won the regular site-selection election. Kevin and Andy came to the SFSFC Board of Directors asking if SFSFC would be willing to the sponsoring non-profit, tax-exempt corporation behind Westercon 66, and the Board voted at their July 30 meeting to bring Westercon into the corporate fold and to confirm Kevin and Andy as committee co-chairs.
